A letter: 23/06/11

The Lisen Profile Travel Journal

23th June 2011

Dear Carole, Diane, Eileen, Ian, Jo and Matt,

I hope that this letter finds you well. Many thank to Diane, Eileen, Ian and Jo for attending this week, it was a really great session of observing, exploring and discovering. I’m sorry Carole and Matt couldn’t make it but we look forward to seeing you again next week!

In this letter I will set a task for next week that follows on from the workshop at LEAF and then I will outline what we will be doing next week.

Task

During this week’s workshop we carried out different activities to build a sensory map and explore how we observe and react to our environment. I thought that the exercises where we had to seek out shapes within the environment were particularly interesting n terms of making us really observe what is around us as we move about.

In light of this I would like to invite you to carry out this activity this week wherever you are. Choose a shape that you like; a circle, square or triangle? Or perhaps something more unusual, a star shape, an ellipse or a shape that you like such as an apple shape? And then as the week progresses make a record of every time you see it around you. It could be when you are travelling somewhere, when you arrive at a destination or when you are moving around your home or neighbourhood.

Please do not put too much pressure on yourself to do this (it could be quite stressful to note down every single circle you see in a week!!) But maybe put aside 5 minutes to observe each day or a couple of 5 minute blocks per day. Your record could be in note form, as a list; in picture form (sketches or photographs etc); recorded on a Dictaphone or a combination of all of these. Make your record however you like.

Please bring the results with you next week (29th). Carole and Matt, if you would like more information about this exercise then contact me on the below details or talk to Jo or Diane about what we did this week.

Workshop 3: Wednesday 29nd June 2011

This week we will meet at The Clock Tower Gallery at Northern General Hospital, Herries Road, Sheffield, S5 7AU. (See map.) We will be visiting the exhibition of the Foxhill Art for Health Group of which Carole and Jo are members. This is the Art for Health group’s first exhibition after a year of classes. Whilst at the gallery we will carry out the following activities:

· We will begin by marking the route that we took to get to the hospital on the map.

· We will discuss our postcards from this week and last.

· We will share our ‘shape records’.

· We will then explore the exhibition and discuss the journey of the Art for Health group.

· We will then discuss the importance of such groups and of coming together to be creative.
